about
It’s my version of a character study. It’s me seeing and accepting the truth of someone then letting go of control over the outcome. I came up with the title when I was angry, and I had written a whole other song or two before its final form. Then I was inspired by the way Judee Sill can write about a character with grace and understanding and still keep her distance. I tried to be playful because it seems like a condemnation. The heavy but buoyant, honest and confident — it’s just an observation.
lyrics
Yes you are so great
And yes you are so good
But would I have said the things that I did
If I knew you could
Use it against me
Use it against me
Use it against me
Oh great pretender
With one foot in the door
You're growing seven more
Careful to keep within arms reach
Of everyone you know
But I am not the moon
Shining only in your blinding sun
What's done is done
I've given you a loaded gun
Use it against me
Use it against me
Use it against me
Oh great pretender

A lovely addition to the best project of 2023, that at some points feel like B-Sides, but is overall just as strong as the work that made it on "the record" Outer Estate

Dirtbag Transformation: "What is this?" was my first reaction. But what an amazing song. It reminds me a bit of the Pixies in how it pulls together dissonance and then resolves. malfunction54
Erudite chamber pop that hearkens back to the elegant and experimental production of the 1960s, swinging from melancholia to playfulness. Bandcamp New & Notable May 13, 2016
Potent pop songs from this Ontario artist with an alternative edge thanks to toothy guitars & synths that go off like fireworks. Bandcamp New & Notable Nov 28, 2022
